FRUIT BODY: 2 - 10 cm in diameter.  Dark brown, often zonate with a slightly wavy edge. Smooth to the touch and becoming darker with age. The caps are relatively thin compared to most fungi. STIPE: Short, brown, finely hairy, central and does not turn black. GILLS/PORES: The white pore surface does not bruise and the pores are slightly oval and 2 - 3mm in diameter. FLESH: White and very tough. SPORES: White, cylindrical. HABITAT: On dead Birch and other deciduous tress. SEASON: Common.  Late autumn. EDIBILITY: Inedible due to its tough leathery texture.
